Metropolis
How did director Fritz Lang imagine how today would be one hundred years ago? METROPOLIS is set in the year 2026 – our present day. The monumental science-fiction film premiered in Berlin in 1927. For 75 years, METROPOLIS, perhaps the most famous of all silent films, was only available in shortened versions. After an extensive restoration by the Murnau Foundation, supplemented with scenes long thought lost, we can now enjoy METROPOLIS in its full, original glory.
What’s it about? The population of METROPOLIS, the “city of the future”, is divided: workers are forced to live in the dark underworld, while the wealthy enjoy a futuristic city full of splendour. The tense balance between these two societies is conveyed through images that have become some of the most iconic of the 20th century. With its elaborate sets and visionary sci-fi style, METROPOLIS remains today a masterpiece of German silent cinema.
